What was Hokusai thinking?

Dr Angus Lockyer, Lecturer in the History of Japan, SOAS University of London

‘The Great Wave’ made Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) one of the best loved artists in the world. But it was only the beginning of an extraordinary outpouring of artistic activity in the last twenty years of his life. This lecture will explore this late work, the subject of the recent special exhibition at the British Museum, asking how Hokusai viewed the world, seen and unseen, and sought to bring it to life.
