Stonehenge: What we now think we know

Stonehenge: What we now think we know

July 6, 2022 at 6:30 pm 9:00 pm

Illustrated talk by Ronald Hutton, Professor of History at Bristol University

The most famous prehistoric monument in the world, Stonehenge has been celebrated for over nine centuries. Its profile in our own nation has never been higher, because of the controversy over the proposed road tunnel beside it, and the major exhibition now at the British Museum. This talk serves two purposes. One is to show what is currently known about its builders, their methods, and its original purpose. The other is to illustrate the different ways in which it has moved the imagination during the past millennium, and the proportionately different theories proposed to explain that purpose. It suggests, finally, what we can and cannot know about it.
