A talk by Sheila Rowbotham: After the Great Western Cotton Works opened in Barton Hill in 1838 employees resisted their harsh working conditions through the courts and through spontaneous strikes.
They were not unionised until 1889, when mainly women workers mobilised through ‘new unionism’ which reached out beyond the craft unions.
Sustained support came from the Bristol Socialist Society, which included several remarkable ‘new women’ from Clifton.
