Music by Ruth Hammond

Ruth Hammond is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who embraces her jazz roots with her own soulful sound. She has performed all over the UK as a multi-instrumentalist and singer, on the stages of the Albert Hall, Ronnie Scott’s and the Jazz Cafe. She recorded and toured internationally with trip-hop band Morcheeba, and through her involvement with the Bristol International Jazz Festival, she has shared the stage with some top jazz artists, including Pee Wee Ellis, Lillian Boutte, Fred Wesley, Bobby Shew and Claire Teale. She is part of jazz organ combo the Hopkins Hammond Trio, she performs keyboard duties in latin/funk outfit Starlings, plays woodwind and synth in funk fusion band Jingu Bang and tenor sax in The Brass Junkies, a brass and percussion ensemble inspired by the street band funk of New Orleans. She also performs as vocalist/pianist in her swing jazz trio and plays solo with her own material. Ruth has released an album of original songs “All the good things” and worked with many local artists in the rich Bristol music scene.

Ruth has also worked with renowned theatre director Sally Cookson – with Benji Bower as musical director, she has collaborated in various productions as part of a group of improvising musicians for highly acclaimed work at Bristol Old Vic and the National Theatre.

As a singer, Ruth leans towards soul, jazz, blues – but basically a good song is a good song whatever the style and she has an eclectic repertoire of originals and well chosen covers.
