Dorothy Byrne ex head of News and Current Affairs at Channel 4 in conversation with Chris Mullin ex MP and Government Minister.
Continuing the theme of ‘truth’ at this year’s festival we are delighted to welcome Dorothy Byrne.
Dorothy knows quite a bit about the importance of truth in politics. She was for many years head of news and current affairs at Channel 4 where she oversaw the highly respected Channel 4 News, Dispatches and Unreported World. She is a fellow of the Royal Television Society.
At the beginning of Boris Johnson’s period as Prime Minister, she caused an outcry when she warned that a known liar was now in 10 Downing Street. She said that television journalists should call out Johnson as a liar. She was condemned in editorials in The Sun and The Mail. Other television journalists did not follow her lead and shied away from using the L word. Would the country have been better off if they had done so?
It was her frustration with truth and deceit in politics that led to her only book, ‘Trust me I am not a Politician’.
This event starts at 3pm in Christ Church.
